Pure water distillation at home are a common method of purifying water. Although they are effective, distillers can have some issues. Distillers are more expensive than other water purification or filtering devices. There are also some drawbacks to these devices, such as the inability to remove certain impurities. Let me explain.
Water must be filtered. It is up to you to decide if a purified water distiller is the best method.
The best filtration method depends on what you want to filter and what your budget is. Water distillers can cost from $350 up to more than $3,000 These water distillers are complex and require many parts to work. If you don’t care about price, pure water distillers may be the best filter you can get.
Let’s discuss what needs to be filtered from your water.
There are more to our water than the deadly microorganisms that were present in the early 20th century. These types of waterborne diseases used to kill thousands of people. Our water filtration systems are designed to protect us from them. Our water systems now contain a wide range of pollutants that municipal facilities are unable to handle.
Our problems now include synthetic chemicals, lead and pesticides. Other organic pollutants, such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium can also be found. These are small enough that they can pass most sediment filters. They aren’t killed by chlorine, as they remain dormant until they are consumed by someone.
The real question is whether you want to purchase a purified water distiller or another type of filtration device.
Water distillers heat water and then evaporate it into another container. This process is supposed to remove all impurities. It usually does. Unless some of the impurities are volatile organic chemicals, it may not. These impurities can be carried over to “purified” water.
Anyone distilling chlorinated water should be aware of this because chlorine can make chemicals called trihalomethanes. One example is chloroform. You could be drinking chloroform along with your purified water if you use a distiller to evaporate it.
This is a huge drawback for pure water distillers!
Their price is another issue.
For a fraction of what you would spend on a purified water distiller, you can get exceptional filters using other technology. They are also easier to use and require fewer parts.
